Why has CNN "Breaking News" dried up?

I just got my first 'breaking news' in a long time. Are all the reporters on vacation? Or, have they finally realized people don't consider the every move of entertainers worthy of breaking news?? I found it very annoying to get breaking news about Britney Spears.

Most news sources are what has been termed "nuzak" meaning that it's not really news but droning entertainment. Take a look at the listed stories at cnn.com. You'll might find 3 stories of substance (glossed over for the undereducated short attention spanned Americans) and 12 pointless pieces of amusing fluff. Here are the current headlines.

CNN is constantly putting up stories that are propaganda against other cultures, shallow political commentary and human interest fluff that really has no business being listed on a national news "outlet". No wonder the people of this country are ignorant apathetic debt-carrying consumers. We allow ourselves to be food for the machine.

Add to that the fact that CNN's latest "breaking news" item is rebroadcast for over 16 hours. I always thought that breaking news was something that's just occurred within the past four hours or so.

I think you're comparing apples and oranges with BBC vs CNN. I'm sure if you compared Sky News in the UK vs CNN, or the BBC to NPR/PBS, you would find a similar story mix. Newzak isn't a strictly American phenomenon.

The vast majority of commercial cable station in the US, and I'm sure many elsewhere in the world, have strayed from their roots. MSNBC devotes about a third of its programming to "behind bars"-type prison shows. The History Channel shows very less history, and more truckers and paranormal/supernatural exploits. The Travel Channel shows poker all day. TLC used to be called "The Learning Channel", but now it's mostly makeovers and the like. Bravo used to be a high culture/arts network; now its programming leans metrosexual. A&E was also a high culture station; it should be renamed L&O for the show they, and the USA Network, rerun so often.

I only get "breaking news" email alerts from CNN. I used to get several a day... today was the first one in weeks.

    Fat Cat

I am afraid that I dont have the luxurery of watching a lot of TV nor do I want,
News in the morning while I am getting ready to go and if I get home in time and am not too tired at night. Rely on the local paper and the wall street journal to get me through.
Less of the nonsense about some one going into or out of rehab who I usually dont even recognize the name and could really care less, so why waste my time watching tv when I could be doing some thing that enjoy
but we are not all the same so this is not a critizism just an observation besides what a boring life if we all liked the same thing

Everything has dried up! RJ and I were discussing the other night, at 5:20 every evening during the news we get "Sports is brought to you by....". Unless it's h.s. football season, there is no sports. Same back in Orlando. When I was a kid, it was like clockwork, 20 min of news, 5 min weather, 5 min sports. Not that I care about sports, but still....
