Another Florida Alefest? (AKA, Flafest '08.)

Perhaps in June? We're flexible. Richie, Flying Monkeys, H? What say you? Did I leave anyone out?
    How about Apalachicola?

I promise, my vehicle is in good running order.

MrTresmo and I are moving to Florida as we speak. We're in, provided we're not out of town.

Where in FL are you moving???? Vague locations are OK, like central, panhandle, etc. PM me or RJ if you don't want it splashed all over the world. Just because, one end of FL to the other is maybe 15 hours.

    Is Apalach' OK with everybody?

May is open so far except the weekend of the 31st. My best dates are looking like the 24th or the 10th.

The 24th is the start of the 3-day Memorial Day weekend. Let's avoid that day.

How about the 10th at about 11:00? Let's meet at the wood fisherman statue at the intersection of Water Street and Avenue East. You can see the statue on Google Earth.

Actually, it would be fun to start my day by meeting some new Cybs and seeing some old friends.

P.S. Don't forget the others are in a different time zone!!

That works for us. Is that 11am central time?

We'll get back here in time for you to shower and shave before we go out. We don't need reservations; Some Taco Bell's are open 24 hours!!!

11:00 Apalachicola time. Now, are they in the eastern time or central time zone?
There's time to figure that out.

    I hope so.

Another idea ZG is that the purpose of teh laefest is really your birthday party/celebration.

It is just kind of scary to only allot what, maybe an hour, to try to shave C-U-B-S into your back hair. But, I'll do my best, honeybunch.

ZG and I did some reconn work today in Apalach (we met her cousin there who is from Sopchoppy). It appears the statue of the fisherman has been stolen. The wooden Indian is still there. It's still a good location to start the tour.

See ya'll at 11:00 ET on May 10th.

Those Cybs are all from Tally and a lot closer to Apalach than you guys, but of course you would be welcome. So would anyone else within driving distance.

We drove down a few streets outside of the "downtown" and I'm really itching to get into the heart of the historic area.

Anyone interested in the John Gorrie (air conditioning pioneer) Museum?

"A young physician named John Gorrie moved to Apalachicola in the early 1800s when it was a prominent port of trade, commerce, and shipping in Florida. Gorrie served as postmaster, city treasurer, town councilman, and bank director. Concern for his yellow fever patients motivated Gorrie to invent a method for cooling their rooms. He became a pioneer in the field of air conditioning and refrigeration by inventing a machine that made ice, and received the first U.S. Patent for mechanical refrigeration in 1851. A replica of his ice-making machine is on display at the museum, as well as exhibits chronicling the colorful history of Apalachicola, which played an important role in Florida's economic development. "

What's on the agenda? A walking tour of Apalachiecola? A walking survey of all the bars? Lunch?

I would reckon meeting in the morning (keeping the time difference in mind), walking a bit, lunch, walking a bit more if interested, possibly a tavern visit if it's a warmish day.... There's a good oyster place with plenty of options for non-seafood people like me, right on the water.

Here's the local tourism website, might give everyone a chance to scope out some things they'd like to see:

Apalach oysters are good anytime. Better in colder water, but still good in May. Not sure why the old saying, perhaps in the days before refrigeration and fast transport it was a problem? Anyone know?

Not sure we can make it, but we'll try.

Bad news... I may be 'observing' traffic circulation, gate operations, and parking at a well known amusement on Saturday the 10th.... It is the only Saturday that the parks engineers would agree to participate in. I am really trying to get this bumped into the summer when the crowds are larger...but they claim that full Saturdays are already happening. I will let you know if I can get out of this and attend the Fl get-together......
