External self storage and internal self storage facilities?

Does any have codes that differeniate between these two types of self storage or mini-warehouse facilties? By internal, I mean those operation that are entirely enclosed within a building and individual units are not accessible from outside the building. By external, I mean more of the tradition self storage with garage doors opening to interior driveways.

I think the internal kind are less industrial in nature and may be more acceptable in commercial districts, while the external kind are diffinitely more industrial.

Any information would be much appreciated? Thanks.

By my own staff interpretation, I permitted an internal self-storage in the basement of a mall. It is different. It was first marketed for medical/legal professionals to store paper records in a climate controlled area. The larger share of users turned out to be individuals with their collectable "collections."
