Bob Edwards and Red Barber on NPR talking about baseball and life. Clock radio would go off in the morning (groan)... then I'd hear Red Barber's voice and the realization would sink in that it was Friday... so close to the weekend.... and then...

I miss having a tolerance for cold weather (I had mono really bad in college and have been a cold-weather wimp ever since).

I miss being able to drive around aimlessly through a big city for an entire day (Austin just doesn't have that big-city feel) and only spend $25 on gas (ah the days of $1.19/gal).

I miss playing my saxophone in the Pride of Oklahoma (the OU marching band) and the 12:30 jazz band.

    I miss ballroom dancing.

    I miss week-long rains.

    The things we miss thread

    1. Brugger's Bagels chain in the midwest. Specifically, the Herby Turkey bagel sandwich. It had this yummy sundried tomato spread and some herbed out creamcheese spread and... oh my.

    2. A time in the not so distant past when I could buy a plane ticket to just about anywhere in the continental US for $200. Also, related, the pleasure of flying on a plane that was not equivilant to a scaled model. Those cabins that are only three seats wide really terrify me on three hour "regional" flights. I realize that this is very unsustainable of me but I can fess up to not being on board with it (heh, nice pun). There is something to be said for right sizing of airplanes to passenger loads but I can still mourn the day when I could take a nap while laying across three seats.

I'm sorry. Is my bias showing?

Let's not be didactic in this profession, because that is a path to disillusion and irrelevancy.

Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?
Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

No. Just some parts wake up faster than others.
Broke parts take a little longer, though.

It's crazy how popular these things are in other countries. I guarantee that you can find a McRib at any South American and most European McDonald's - they're part of the regular menu. Something about the look of them always creeped me out

I also miss being without angst...
You get all squeezed up inside/Like the days were carved in stone/You get all wired up inside/And it's bad to be alone

You can go out, you can take a ride/And when you get out on your own/You get all smoothed out inside/And it's good to be alone

Lum's hot dogs; dang, they were good

My mom taking care of me when I'm sick; especially the soft-boiled eggs she made...

Sometimes I'm nostalgic for the days of only 3 t.v stations; when there was nothing on, our family actually interacted...

I don't really miss any one person, or thing, but rather events, from just about every part of my life:

*playing softball in our backyard using trees as bases (hoping no one slid )
*building bridges and floats (pallets w/ styrofoam) in the wetland back forty of our property
*high school sucked, so don't miss anything about that
*college, the friends, the $1 pitcher at the Nickle, even the classes
    *grad school, same as above

Although I feel nostaligic about these things, I wouldn't change a thing though. I think I am the happiest I've been in a long time.

    [bumping this classic thread]

    - I miss the innocence of youth. Seeing it through my son's eyes actually amplifies my angst
    - I miss being able to sleep in late
    - I miss being able to sleep even adequate amounts
People will miss that it once meant something to be Southern or Midwestern. It doesn't mean much now, except for the climate. The question, “Where are you from?” doesn't lead to anything odd or interesting. They live somewhere near a Gap store, and what else do you need to know? - Garrison Keillor

    I miss liking my job.

I miss not getting cold at night.

I miss my friend that now lives overseas.

I miss being able to sleep in on weekends.
"We do not need any other Tutankhamun's tomb with all its treasures. We need context. We need understanding. We need knowledge of historical events to tie them together. We don't know much. Of course we know a lot, but it is context that's missing, not treasures." - Werner Herzog, in Archaeology, March/April 2011
