Veloise.....This Bear read the entire Albom piece. Loved it. In some ways, many of the thoughts and comments written about Detroit are applicable fits to their neighbor to the south, Toledo.
Here's hoping that both weather the storm(s) and move in a positive direction into the second decade of the century.

Since the Freep is notorious for taking down articles early, I figured I'd find another resource for the article Veloise mentioned. I did like the photos, and first thought this was the same article he did a few weeks back about the pastor near the Motor City Casino. After reading this, I found it to be a good article, Too many sports analogies, but I've grown to expect that from Mitch.
It was a good day here in Detroit. Drove over to the Detroit Institute of the Arts (DIA) to see the $300 million expansion. I got there and tried to park only to find out the surface lot now houses a new wing to the Science Center that will approximately double its size. Ten years ago it was doubled! This was a surprise to me, I am almost ashamed to admit I did not know it was going on. Well the line to get in the DIA streached around the corner, so I did what all other good Detroiters did. I gave up and went to the Motor City Casino to try my hand at the nickle slots!I wandered around it for a while as it has changed quite a bit since I've been there last. There are new convention facilities, restraunts, a hotel and more gaming space now. Back to the nickles, I put in a Lincoln and soon had it up to $70.40! Why do I even go to work when money comes that easy from the casino?
Best of all? so far I've heard no sirens today.

Considering that he wrote it for Sports Illustrated, one wouldn't expect him to be discussing transit or the former train station or the new bridge or the riverfront coolness.
How come my local paper (HQ: 1.5 miles away) can't retain a reliable delivery person, but my Freep shows up every Sunday? And it's clad in a colorful plastic bag, which makes it easy to find out front.
Detroit is no longer #1!!! (on Forbes most miseable city list), heck even Chicago beats it in terms of being a miserable place to live. I don't know if this is because Detroit has got better or the rest of you are finally feeling what we have for the last few years.
