    City planning volunteering

So it has been mentioned to gain as much experience as possible even if it means volunteering.

I would like to volunteer for the local city, but unsure on how to present myself.

Go in person and speak to the director of planning? A planner? Front desk person? Or zoning dept?

Or call and setup a time to volunteer to gain exposure?

Thanks for any advice or guidance!

Hmm. Let me put my "job-seeking" hat on.

I would schedule an appointment time with the planning director/assistant planning director, etc to inquire about how you can go about volunteering for the organization, but make sure you come prepared. As in do some research, look into their code, ask if there has been anything that needs to be updated, verifications need for conditions of housing, whatever, hell even volunteer to map out forclosed homes for possible purchase for the city to turn into affordable house. Get creative.

How to find out some of this info? Attend a planning commission or county board/city council hearing. See what the hot topics are. Even approach a director or senior level planner from there, but remember, do your homework so you don't look like a jackass begging for way in.
