Things to lose sleep over thread.

Tomorrow I have to give my first ever presentation on planning to a captive audience of AP Geography students at the local high school. Look at me giving back to my profession and taking AICP all serious like! I hope to catch an ear or two and turn them on to planning as a possible career choice while they are still young, impressionable, and not too jaded. After all, I didn’t know that this job even existed until I was tunneling through college level gen ed courses.

I studied up on a thread related to speaking to elementary school students and I’m pretty sure it will go ok despite the fact that there’s no specific area that I’m supposed to discuss.…yet still, there’s that small voice in my head that is agonizing over saying the right thing and the potential for being eaten alive by the cool kids. I’m afraid I’ll feel like a 15 year old.

What’s got you losing sleep these days? Upcoming prostate exam? Visit from the inlaws? First baby on the way? Share!
How about you take a gander at making an executive decision for once, huh?

Doesn't take much for me to lose sleep. Something stupid like casually noticing a tire going soft in the evening suddenly assumes undeserved importance at 4 am.....man, I hope it doesn't go flat overnight....I suppose I could always use some of that 'fix-a-flat' stuff when I get up...do I have any left, after all I may have used it up three weeks ago?..... Three weeks ago?! Oh crap! I just remembered I was supposed to execute that nonconforming sign agreement three weeks ago.... Maybe I can go in a little early and sneak that onto the boss' desk.... 'Course if I get up earlier am I even going to be able to see where that can of fix-a-flat stuff is, it's in the shed and there's no light there....hmm it is getting light earlier because of daylate savings....no wait, it's getting light later.......

Dittos. But I am starting to worry about my 6 month old's bad skin issues. Poor guy - it must suck to be itchy all the time.
I'm sorry. Is my bias showing?

Let's not be didactic in this profession, because that is a path to disillusion and irrelevancy.

I lose sleep over losing sleep.

Also, will my son be able to get in a really good college? And if he does get in a really good college, will I be able to afford it?

How will I afford a trip home when my dad dies? What about my mom - she is all alone in that house I grew up in?

Who is going to take care of my sister when my parents are gone?

Then there are the philosophical and unanswerable questions of life that haunt me:

Why is there an expiration date on sour cream?

If bedtime stories are so good, why do they put you to sleep?

If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, who cares?

And how much wood could a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

    Counting Suburbs

This Bear doesn't usually have a problem falling asleep. My problem is physical.....up way too many times to wander over to the necessary room. I need to have my prostate checked. Soon.

When my balding noggin hits the pillow I turn on the radio, very softly, to WBBM-AM (Chicago) and listen to the news. I also think about my fake city (De Noc)....projects, drawings, charts, yadda. I even will start to list the fake city suburbs in my mind....and the death-like grip of sleep wins the battle.

Katie is the opposite. She has a real problem getting shut-eye. (Probably worried about that sleeping bruin that is snuggled against her.....word on the street is that he can be one mean SOB.)

    Yes, some things worry me.....

The health and safety of my family.
    My own health.
    Our current economic slump.

I spent most of last night wide awake:

How could my kid spend over $150 in a month downloading Xbox movies; and how can I cancel that? (Seriously, Xbox won't cancel your credit card from an account...warning, big trouble there)

My mother could die any day. Will I just get an impersonal email from my brother telling me when it happens? Probably...

Will there ever be a job for me in this godforsaken place? I mean, other than at Mc Donald's? I'd shoot for Wendy's but, geez, we are too small to have a Wendy's....

Next time he fires up XBox live, call him to do a chore and go in and change the password, that will teach him...

I don't have problems falling asleep...it's the waking up 2 or 3 times and finally staying awake after 5:30. I have woke up around 4:30 for the last 5 days in a row because of the massive public hearing which occurred last night.

My biggest problem is when I wake up in the middle of the night, my mind tends to start thinking of the day or projects ahead, it just races.

I lose sleep over several things:

-my job - am I about to be laid off? Why haven't I gotten a call about that lateral transfer position I applied for? Why do I have such crappy coworkers? When will I get some recognition for that big project I worked on? etc, . . .
-my husband - is he about to get laid off? Why won't he talk about why he says he hates his job? When will he learn to read a laundry label and not ruin something in the dryer? etc . . .
-my dogs - constant worry about how they're doing, are then getting along when we're not home, etc . . .
And then threre's times my mind just races over and over about topics not mentioned above. I didn't sleep much at all when dad was in the hospital for his heart surgery, and I worry about my sister living overseas sometimes.

Insomnia is your friend - it keeps you company while you're awake!

Generally speaking, if I can't sleep, it's due to some physiological reason, not due to fretting. As my health issues get resolved, I suffer insomnia a lot less than I used to.

I lose sleep when the dammed dumpster guy arrives at the $#$&%^ Polish Bakery at my corner at 4 am "BLAM!! BLAM!!! BLAM!!!" Remind me to buy my next house about six away from the commerical corridor instead of only one.

I always have been too, but since I've come down here to Kentucky, I've noticed that after a contentious public meeting (almost all of them around here), I don't have a problem going to sleep, but when (not if) I get up to use the restroom, I might as well just go watch European soccer on TV. I'm not going to be getting any more sleep that night.

Lately...it's the new girl. Can't sleep when I'm with her, can't sleep when I'm without her. I'm always thinking about her.

Also, if my dog is sleeping in bed with me, that can be uncomfortable and keep me awake.

A line of severe thunderstorms or a blizzard poised to strike in the middle of the night can keep me awake.

Having a bad confrontation with someone during the daytime can keep me awake.

Being sick can keep me awake.

And I often get antsy the night before the first day of work or school or something else new, different, or exciting happening the next day.

Counting suburbs...that's a good one. I'll have to try that sometime. Sometimes I count state capitals or largest cities in each state. But yeah, I should start counting suburbs when I can't sleep. Chicago has so many...surely I'll tire out before naming them all.

It always takes me at least half an hour to fall asleep, unlike Mrs. Tranplanner, who is gone before her head hits the pillow. We also have to play musical positions (keep your minds out of the gutter!) as she prefers spooning me, and I prefer spooning her. I usually have to wait 10-15 minutes before I can shift her over and get comfortable (i.e. get out of her death grip and roll over). And of course there is the cat who usually takes about 5-10 minutes to settle in and stop purring.

Nights when I have a public meeting, I don't even bother trying to get to sleep right away, no matter what time I get home. I'll sit with a glass of scotch in front of the TV watching sports highlights until I feel I will have a chance to fall asleep.

As suggested to me once, I tried counting backwards to fall asleep. I figured it would be safe to start at 1000. No dice.

Ditto. I have managed to cut a lot of corners with a paycut and still put money back in the bank. My parents offered the basement to me and I politely thanked them, but I will do whatever it takes not to end up like that ever again.

Other things to lose sleep over:
    Hyperinflation of goods (100%,200%,300%)
Not being able to sprint as quickly (due to my foot injury) since I run so much.
De-valuation of the dollar (due to other countries refusal to buy US debt)
Confiscation of gold if we revert back to a gold standard (I am planning on buying a few eagles soon)
My high school reunion (sometime in June)
