Eagle Scout project: Google Earth 3D of his town

    HIGHLIGHT:
Since meeting some executives from Google at a National Main Street Conference in Philadelphia last March, and learning about Google’s free SketchUp 3-D software, Mayor Holden had wanted to three-dimensionalize Madison, but had not been able to harness the staff or leadership for the task.

Madison would become the second nonurban community to be displayed in this form, the first having been McMinnville, Tenn., the 3-D model of which went online in July 2008.

training session was taped for future use with other towns.
Gets my vote as an Eagle Project.
I wonder if there would be other similar project attempted in other communities ?
Would you support or participate in such a project ?
    Oddball
Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?
Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?
    From Kelly's Heroes (1970)

Are you sure you're not hurt ?
No. Just some parts wake up faster than others.
Broke parts take a little longer, though.
    From Electric Horseman (1979)

As an Eagle myself, this project impresses the hell out of me. I always enjoy it when somebody goes outside of the box for their eagle service project. I would absolutely be there and would support it anywhere. I see this as a major way to get even the smallest towns with limited budgets into the 3D dataset. I've sat on Eagle review boards in the past, and would be totally psyched to see something like this. I get tired of see the same old small pedestrian bridges and park bench projects. It would not surprise me to see this kid get a national award--this is the type of cutting-edge image the Boy Scouts are trying to reinvent themselves with.

"Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country."
