USA Today article: store truly belongs to community

Interesting article about stores owned by the residents of the community.

    Communities mentioned:
    Clark, S.D.: http://www.clarksd.com/business/clar...ownvariety.htm
    Saranac Lake, N.Y: http://www.community-store.org/
    Powell, WY
    Plentywood, MT
    Ely, NV: http://www.garnetmercantile.com/about_us
    Livingston, MT

    A different tourism destination.
Has anybody visited any of these stores ?

Great self commercial preservation effort of those communities or just quaint ?

I don't think the Saranac Lake community store has started operations yet. Last I heard, they were still selling shares. These things take awhile to get off the ground, and need to be combined with a strategy to promote the benefits of "buying local."

The Powell, WY store seems to be cited the most. There is also a community-owned store in Greenfield, MA, and a community-owned restaurant in Hardwick, VT. I have not had a chance to visit any of them yet.
