    2009 Buffalo Garden Walk

For all of you who like gardens or architecture, the 2009 Buffalo Garden Walk is July 25 and 26. This is one of the largest garden tours in the US, featuring 300+ gardens on Buffalo's West Side from the Erie Basin Marina to Forest Avenue and from Main Street to the Niagara River -- all absolutely free.

For out-of-towners, you can also take in the Darwin Martin House (Frank Lloyd Wright) and/or the Olmstead Park system as well as include a side-trip to Niagara Falls to see the Falls and do the casinos (bring your passport or enhanced id driver's license to cross the border).

If the weather's half way decent, I'm thinking I'll do both days this year. It's well worth it! Last year they had a "jitney" bus to take walkers around the garden route. We drove ourselves, picking parking spots near neighborhoods with lots of gardens within walking distance.

Those are some great garden pictures! I've only been on a couple of garden tours. They seem to feature very imaginative floral landscaping, but didn't seem to feature vegetables/fruits as prominently. I do recall one house in Schoolcraft, though, that had a 'tunnel' in their rear garden path, where pole beans grew up a series of trellises that arched overhead.
People will miss that it once meant something to be Southern or Midwestern. It doesn't mean much now, except for the climate. The question, “Where are you from?” doesn't lead to anything odd or interesting. They live somewhere near a Gap store, and what else do you need to know? - Garrison Keillor
