Car-free challenge in the Bay Area

I wasn't sure if I should post this in Transportation or here, but finally I decided its more of a community development thing.

A group in Oakland is running a Car-Free Challenge for the month of June (more info is at (http://www.transformca.org/live/car-free-challenge).

It seems a pretty interesting idea for community organizing around livable cities. Anyone ever seen anything similar in their communities?

If anyone is in the bay, I'd suggest signing up, and if not, supporting someone would be awesome too (I'm doing it).

I'll have to take a look through that. I've already lived car-free in SF for a little over three years now (tried living in SF with a car and nearly went insane). I usually do use a rental car once or twice a month for out of city trips, but I doubt I will this coming month, so I could put up a goose egg for this challenge.

This is a great idea. I will try to see if we can get a similar thing going here in Boston.

My new year's resolution was to drive once a week, but like every resolution, I broke it. I drive maybe once every other month.

I've lived car-free in NYC for 15 years. The last 4 have been in a planned garden community in NYC. When I first moved here, a man with a broken leg told me that he had spent his entire life in the community and managed without a car even with his broken leg. Everything - 2 movie theaters, restaurants, 3 supermarkets, 2 subways, a park, playgrounds, are all within a 15-minute walk from my apartment. The community really works out well.
