PhD criteria in urban planning at MIT

    Hello,
I hope someone familiar with the doctoral program at MIT can offer some advice. MIT has a GRE cutoff of 1200 and 5.0 for Phd applicants. I scored a 1400 (790 Q, 610 V), 4.5 on my first attempt. How important is that 0.5 shortfall? Would a paper published in a peer-reviewed, planning journal (Environment and Planning) assuage any fears of writing deficiency or is the 5.0 cutoff hard and fast???

I have the same question regarding minimum cutoff for the GRE score. Is anything that one can do to overcome AW scores less than 5.0 (sample papers)?
