    Introduction and interest in homeless "communities"

    My husband and I about ready to make the big jump across the pond to Australia. where I have not lived for 38 years.
    After a long career in health care we are not ready to sit on the porch and sip chardys!
    He is an emergency dept physician and after retiring from my role as hospital CEO, I became a Rabbi, not your usual career move!
    Now both of us are ready for a new adventure.
    I am very interested in how homeless "communities" organize themselves ( such as the one we have seen in Santa Barbera, CA) and where homelessness fits in the national policy scene/debate in Oz. And where "best practice" around affordable housing is being practiced?
    Also wondered whether the trend to shared communities ( as in Corvallis Oregon and Portand Oregon) is moving in Australia...smaller energy efficient homes with a common living area and gardens....

    I know!
    But if the change is not bodacious, it doesn't get the attention of the universe!
    It has been a very interesting experience of selling home, contents, giving stuff to people you love, seeing your favorite casserole dish go out the front door and putting a handkerchief on a stick.

    The main text of my class on 'Homelessness and Public Policy' is a little paperback called "Tell Them Who I am". It was written by a man dying of cancer who had already been volunteering in a homeless shelter and decided to quit his job and spend his last months on earth doing something more worthwhile than chasing a paycheck. A great read. I highly recommend it.

    There used to be a free website available for the class "Homelessness and Public Policy". Unfortunately, the last zillion times I looked for it, it was nowhere to be found. So off the top of my head I can't think of any other resources.

    It's about the goals. I just get to be a vehicle for them.
