    Artesia, NM

Artesia, in the southeastern part of the state between Roswell and Carlsbad, is very much an oil town, and it shows in many ways. Unlike some other New Mexico oil towns I could name, however, it seems to have put some effort into using its mineral wealth to fix up its downtown, which is actually quite nice.

If it wasn't for the refineries and the big mural of Apaches I'd say it looks a lot like many smaller to mid-size central Illinois towns. Flat, some trees, no desert landscape and similar types of buildings and uses. It reminds a little of Rantoul, Illinois (especially with the fighter jet in the park).
