Choosing a university - Cyburbia Forums

Hi,

I'm relatively new to the forum but I am hoping maybe some kind people could provide some advice on selecting a university for postgraduate study.

I have offers for The University of Queensland, Griffith University, The University of New South Wales, RMIT and The University of Sydney.

I understand that most advice tends to be subjective but still I would appreciate some advice and opinions from people who have attended the above universities, who know of people who are attending or have attended.

Depends if want to work in Melbourne, SE Queensland or Sydney. Most of the programs focus on the local legislation.

I am not sure about Gold Coast Griffith University anymore. We do have issues with parking and marking. However, I do like the Urban and Environmental mix.

I am considering the Master of Urban and Environmental Planning program at Griffith Nathan.

I contacted various firms in SE Qld and received overwhelming responses that it doesn't really make much difference whether I attend UQ or Griffith.

One thing I have noticed, however, is that the Griffith program seems to be much more "practical" compared to the equivalent programs at UQ and Uni of Sydney. I discovered this through researching the core courses and the like. Most of the courses at the 'sandstone' universities tend to be weighed down in theory.

Having attended one of the Group of Eight universities in the past has proven that it is not really worth going into debt for name alone.

I have also discovered that there appears to be many more work experience opportunities for planning students in SE Qld compared to the southern capitals.

You will be well looked after. Typically we get to choose our groups but in development processes studio a supergroup was created by the lecturer with 2 masters and one honours student.

I cant say much for the masters course @ UNSW, but i did my undergrad there and enjoyed it. Its the best course to do if you want to work in Sydney

Hi. My name is Tomoki form Japan.
im new to the forum.
im thinking of applying to the masters course in Planning
at UNSW, UQ, or MacquarieU.
does anyone have opinion or know reputation about the
master of environmental planning in Macquarie?
also if there's any comment on environmental planning degree
in Australia, it would be quite helpful.

Hi tomoki,

I think all are good programs. I know Macquarie is more focused on the environmental planning aspects. Depends on where you want to work after you are done. Some schools have connections with different consultancies. Planning in Australia right now is really slow, even though we keep hearing about stimulus projects and coming construction boom.
