    Signage along main urban corridors?

We're working on a couple of corridor studies here in Athens and I am specifically working on signage and lighting. Working on making recommendations for changes to the sign ordinance has kinda got me in a bit of planner's block. I was wondering what you guys would consider the "ideal" signage for an urban corridor. Pics are always a plus...

Kind of a hard question to answer. Is the urban corridor in question more of a historic urban core or a strip-commercial area? It's easy to point to beautiful signage but ultimately it depends on how much regulation the residents and business owners want.

Considering the music history that took place in Athens (B-52's, REM & others) would some kind of historical markers of important events in their careers be out of the question? That's what I would be interested in seeing if I went to Athens.

Some unique street name and way-finding signs can add to the attractiveness of a corridor as long as they are not oversized and are context-sensitive. Maybe you are thinking of design guidelines for all signage on buildings?
