They say folks that live in NYC don't bother to visit the Statue of Liberty. I suppose people living in Orlando or Anaheim don't bother to go to Disney, or folks in San Antonio don't go to the Alamo.
How about you - what don't you bother to see or experience that's in your back yard?
Living in NC for 8 years, I did not visit the Outer Banks until I had moved.
I lived in Michigan for 2 years and never went to Detriot or Ann Arbor.
I lived in DC for a year and never went to the Archives or went in the Washington or Jefferson Memorial.
I have lived in AZ for 20+ years and have only been to the Grand Canyon once (and that was briefly), never been to the 4 corners, painted desert, or rafted the Colorado River.

Living in Chicagoland all my 22 years, I've never been to Navy Pier and don't really feel like I'm missing out. Drove past it, went on a boat past it, but never actually been on the grounds. Never been to the top of the Sears Tower, but I have been to the top of the John Hancock. And I've never been to the Museum of Science & Industry, but have been to just about all the other major museums. I also feel bad since I've never been to a Bears game or Bulls game, though I have been to both Solider Field and United Center, but for concerts though. Also right in my backyard is the Illinois Railway Museum, which I still have not been to.
Navy Pier really isn't on my list of places I'd like to go, but the rest are, particularly the museums and the games.
Never been to many North Shore communities (Lake Forest, Glencoe, Winnetka, Wilmette), the area used as the setting for many John Hughes movies. Only been to Highland Park once.
Also, this year marks the first time I've been to Indiana in my 22 years in Chicagoland (but have covered a lot of ground in the state this year).

I don't bother going to the casinos much, but will when I need free parking nearby. I also don't go to Lions games anymore. There also seems to be nothing that comes to the Fox Theatre anymore that compells me to go there, I must be in that ere where I am too old for annoying pop music but too young for the geezer shows.
I do have a membership to the Henry Ford Museum Complex, and been to the DIA a few times since they expanded it.

Fisherman's Wharf - I just really don't get the appeal of a bunch of trinket shops and overpriced restaurants. I tend to avoid the equivalent places in cities that I visit as a tourist too - the presence of a Bubba Gump Shrimp Co, Hard Rock Cafe, and Joe's Crab Shack in close proximity to one another is generally a red flag to me, though I don't really have an opinion either way on any of those places individually.
It wasn't until my fifth year in the Bay Area that I managed to visit Alcatraz, which seems weird to me now (natski was here for two or three days and managed to visit, and it took me five years?)

Funny that you mention the Statue of Liberty, Maister. One of my cousins recently brought her kids to the Statue of Liberty, and I mentioned that I'd never been there -- even though both my parents were born and raised in NYC and I spent a lot of time in the City while growing up.
I think I've been to most of the major attractions in my own backyard. I enjoy museums and historic sites, and there are plenty of those around here.
I have to say, though, that I have very little interest in visiting "the track" and watching the horse races at Saratoga in the summertime. I've never really understood the appeal of betting on the horses or of gambling in general, for that matter. So I'll leave Saratoga Race Course for all those people from out of town who have big bucks to spend.
Been to most of what IP mentioned with the exception of the United Center and Soldier Field (have been to both baseball stadiums). Haven't been to the top of the Hancock but have been to the top of the Sears (before I moved here). As a transplant I have made it a goal to see as much of the region as possible. I guess being new here I don't just take everything for granted.

That's a good one! I've never been to Yosemite as an adult (went once when I was 13 or 14 and my family lived in Idaho). I don't think my fiancée has been either - maybe a weekend trip sometime this spring is in order.

Ha no! If you knew someone who worked there (or any of the parks) they had free tickets often. Also one year I got a Sea World annual pass with my then bf, we went a couple of time a month and since we weren't there on vacation, you don't feel pressured to get to everything in one day.

Since I'm still an import here, I've managed to hit most of the touristy things here and on the coast. The only to-do things are to see a play and a concert at the University. As for the other things in MS, I have been to them, including Vicksburg, Natchez, the Trace, Port Gibson. I been to the Coast before and after Katrina and seen most of the stuff there.
When I was living in KY near Louisville, I never saw Churchhill Downs or Keeneland. I did manage to hit all the other touristy places in KY.
When living in IN, I only went to the Speedway twice. Once to the museum and once to a time trial.
I've been to most of the stuff in Chicago-Science and Industry, Shedd, Natural History, Cubs and Sox games. I've never been to to either the Adler or Navy Pier. I also never to see either the Bulls or the Bears play.

The only touristy things right near me that I haven't been to is the Motown Historical Museum... but I've driven past it multiple times if that counts for anything. I also haven't been to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra or the Opera House but would like to (I wanted to go see David Sedaris at the Opera House recently but it was way too expensive).

Ohio does have the best two roller coaster parks in the country in Cedar Point and Kings Island. Well worth the money and lines.
I think everyone should visit Dayton/Youngstown/Toledo at least once. It will be more of an urban decline tour, but what says vacation like cheap motels and shady people?
