    Regional teams

Went to a New England Revolution game last night. I love the regional team names. I miss the California Angels. Carolina Panthers. What other ones am I missing?

Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?
Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

Carolina Panthers is our NFL team too, so that one isn't so original.

Back home we had the Hickory Crawdads. I love that name.

Love the local eccentric names too, but I meant the name being a region not a city. I miss the Florida Marlins and the Golden State Warriors

Every Minnesota team, from pro to up-and-coming leagues are named after the state>

    Minnesota Twins
    Minnesota Vikings
    Minnesota Timberwolves
    Minnesota WIld
    Minnesota Lynx WNBA
    Minnesota Swarm Lacrosse
    Minnesota United Soccer

You won't find another region that so collectivly understands their market is an entire region and not one city. Even though the Twin Cities is the dominate city in the area they respect the entire northern region.

Even the former Minnesota North Stars, good catch. The only one I can think of that does not are the St. Paul Saints.

Speaking of the North Stars, they missed a classic opportunity for a great name when they moved to Dallas by becoming the Dallas Stars rather than the Texas Lone Stars.

Arizona Diamondbacks was specifically named to represent the region. Everyone knows there nothing outside of the Phoenix metro, but they still wanted to represent all of Arizona. They even play Cactus League down in some city called Tucson. I hear it's south of Phoenix.

The Saints are the only "pro" team in MN not named after the state and that's because they started in the 1890s and are an independent franchise. They competed against the Minneapolis Millers who folded when the Twins arrived in 1961. Since 1961 every MN team has been "Minnesota" due to the tradition of the Twins and VIkings (both came to MN in 1960). I know way more than I should about this.

And though I often overhear people speaking of "Tampa Bay" as if it were a city, let's not forget that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and the Tampa Bay Lightning represent the entire Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area. Yes, they aren't being as inclusive as teams using the state name, but it's still something.

No teams are as regional as the New England teams which represent 6 states. The equivalent would be the "Upper Mid-West Blizzards."

No pro team is as super-local as the Brooklyn Nets which don't even represent a whole city. (Although Brooklyn's population is bigger than many states.)

There is also the minor league baseball team - Brooklyn Cyclones.
Cyclones, refers to the famous Coney Island Cyclone roller coaster at nearby Astroland amusement park.

And while we are talking about sports teams with cool names, I especially miss the Phoenix Cardinals, because two birds are better than one!
