    Employment application question

    I am filling out an application for a planning job and it asked me for my SSN, im just wondering if they can ask for my SSN.

    It's standard on applications, and it's entirely legal to ask for it, but (from what I understand) until you are actually offered employment, when your employer actually needs your SS# by law, you are not legally obligated to provide it. My mother instilled this into me as a child-- she routinely refused to provide her full SS# to just about everyone who requested it.

    Having said that, I always provide it when asked on an application. I'd rather do that than make waves so early in the application process.
