Do you need a bachelors in environmental science?

How important is having a bachelors in an environmental field to getting a job as an environmental planner? (Assuming you complete a masters in urban planning) Do employers put a lot of emphasis on what your bachelors is in?

Also, where do most environmental planners work? (Government vs Private)

No. I have a BS in city and regional planning and I primarily do environmental planning. It is harder for an environmental science major to do general planning work than it is for a planning major to do env. planning. So get a degree in planning, then specialize in environmental stuff.

There are a lot of environmental planners in private practice, consulting for cities and counties. Look at some of the larger companies like AECOM and SWCA. When you get to the smaller companies, most of themmight specialize in one area of the environment, such as biology, geology, air, GHG, etc. For example, one of the companies that SWCA recently absorbed in my neck of the woods was a small biology firm that consisted of biologists, and maybe a planner or two. In these cases, the planners will digest the info the scientists produce, writing the reports and such.

Bachelors in Urban and Regional Planning. Private Sector, going on five years on the dark side, although I also work in several other branches of planning at my current job and last job.

Not if you get into general environmental planning (NEPA) - one of the best NEPA planners I know has an undergrad degree in marketing...
