    Example of bicycle tunnel anywhere?

    Hi all,

I am looking for example to back up my idea of a bike tunnel along a proposed major road tunnel in Hong Kong, connecting the urban area and the suburb. My argument for such a bike tunnel to enable biker to travel between the places, which are separated by high hill, instead of either taking bus or metro.
I am wondering if a bike tunnel alongside a road tunnel of 3 - 4 km long would be feasible, from any perspective such as financial, operational, etc.
Please help to provide international example on this.
    thanks alot!

Have you googled "bicycle tunnel" ?
    Oddball
Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?
Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

Are you sure you're not hurt ?
No. Just some parts wake up faster than others.
Broke parts take a little longer, though.

Hi JNA, I did a quick check before, but didn't find them very relevant at a first glance.
Upon your request, I googled again. The most relevant would be this one:
Basque longest bicycle tunnel, 850m long.

Other results from google which didn't interest me like:
    short tunnel under motorway:

    or this:

or shuttle van service to carry bicycle through tunnel:

What's funny, the 6th result of the search is this post!

I am unaware of any examples. In the mountainous regions of the United States, bike paths typically follow the face of the mountains, adding distance and perhaps some elevation change. Bike lanes added to a highway tunnel of any length would not work, as there would be potential safety concerns and definitely concerns with air quality. A separate tunnel would be both expensive to construct and to maintain. Like a highway tunnel, it might need lighting and ventilation.

Here are some alternative thoughts, though. The Elroy-Sparta Trail in Wisconsin is one of the first rail-trail conversions. There are three railroad tunnels along the route that have been incorporated into the trail. The longest is 2/4 of a mile, or 1.2 kilometers. The tunnels are not illuminated and riders are required to walk through the tunnels, although it is possible to ride the smaller ones if other bicyclists are not around. All of this was feasible only because the tunnels were constructed by the railroad. Boring new tunnels would cost too much.
