Suggestions for inexpensive complete streets projects

We have a small amount of funding ~$7,500 from a County Health Department grant to implement aspects of our Complete Streets Policy. In coordination with the Engineering Department we were going to add or restripe bike lanes on portions of 3 streets. Unfortunately the staff person who was assigned to that project has had some medical issues and been out of the office so the project has been dormant.

I'm starting to be concerned that the projects aren't going to get finished in time. We need to expend the funds by September 30, 2010. If we are unable to do those projects I want to have an alternative to use these funds. If we screw this up it may affect future funding from the Health Dept.

Does anyone have any suggestions of any physical projects that are inline with Complete Streets that we could do with that budget and that time frame?

Without a review of your Complete Streets Policies or Plan, I am at a loss.

Besides striping, you might want to look at ped crossings, wheelchair ramps, transit connections, or bike racks.

Yes, retrofit CSS projects are expensive. Try some trees on ped refuges, striping, signing.

Interestingly enough the City is reducing the speed limit to 25 mph. Apparently DOT has mandated a change in the size of the speed limit signs and rather than having to replace all our signs with larger compliant signs if we drop the speed limit to 25 we can keep our current signs. I suppose we'll get more revenue from speeding tickets if our police actually were to enforce the speed limit.

We recently constructed a bicycle boulevard along one of are east-west streets. We used grant funding to install sharrows, assorted pavement markings, bicycle wayfinding signage, warning signs, bicycle racks and to reverse some stop signs. It was a very cost-effective project. You could also look at adding peds heads and crosswalks to an intersection.

How do we know that anything we suggest wouldn't also fall under the purview of the guy off sick?

Potted trees and other plants, as well as on-street parking, can be good small measures to provide buffers and traffic calming that make pedestrians, cyclists, and N.E.V.-users feel safe.

With that budget, ramp is singular, not plural.

One ramp costs from $400-$500 around here. You could do 2 complete intersections or if you concentrated on on straight route, you could have almost 1/2 mile accessible route.
