How many of you are scared of the water?
It is all a matter of perspective!!!
I can swim, but I've never been a strong swimmer. I prefer drifting on a pool floatie.
"We do not need any other Tutankhamun's tomb with all its treasures. We need context. We need understanding. We need knowledge of historical events to tie them together. We don't know much. Of course we know a lot, but it is context that's missing, not treasures." - Werner Herzog, in Archaeology, March/April 2011
I grew up on Lake Huron. I'm pretty much a fish.
"I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany"
I'm alright and I really enjoy being in the water, but like salmissra, I just prefer wading or floating in a pool. Maybe a few laps in the pool. Maybe a few yards out into a lake or ocean occasionally, but that's about it.
"Life's a journey, not a destination"
-Steven Tyler
I can swim. I have problems opening my eyes underwater, and prefer to use goggles and a nose guard when swimming underwater. My wife is hydrophobic, so I rarely swim these days.
Grew up on the Jersey Shore - surf.
As several of us had posted before;
we were Boy Scouts and in order to earn your Eagle you had to have swimming and life saving merit badges.

Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?
Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

Are you sure you're not hurt ?
No. Just some parts wake up faster than others.
Broke parts take a little longer, though.
From Electric Horseman (1979)
"Other": I can put my head under the water, and even float, but I can't swim.
I was a decent swimmer back in the day but rarely get a chance to get in the water these days.
I LOVE swimming! But, I live in the desert so opportunities are scarce so I don't get to do it as much as I would like. I was on the swim team in HS and I still like to do laps when I have access, but open water swimming is my favorite.
Swimming is one skill I am very glad I learned as a kid.
The purpose of life is a life of purpose
I would consider myself a pretty good swimmer. I am always told I have a swimmer's body!? Not sure if that is a good thing or what, but I have broad shoulders. I like swimming, but it isn't running. And running is just better.![]()
A common mistake people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools. -Douglas Adams
Growing up in FLA, mom put me in the pool when I was 6 months old to learn how to swim. Have been a lifeguard (way too many years ago) and certified scuba.

I wouldn't consider myself a good swimmer by any stretch but I love the beach and pools and have no problem putting my head under the water (I'm actually a better swimmer underwater than I am above it!).
In the Marine Corps I passed the first two rounds of swim qualifications and nothing pass that. So I can basically float for a while with a bunch of gear.

Not a very good swimmer. And I haven't swam in years. Never did get the swimming with your head underwater thing. Swimming with your head stuck out of the water gets tiring fast.
Decent swimmer. Grew up swimming in Lake Michigan and various small SW Michigan and UP lakes. I don't remember swimming in a pool anywhere until somewhere around around the end of high school.

I'd like to take up scuba diving again at some point.....but it is VERY expensive.
On the ground, protecting the Cyburbia Shove since 2004.
Decent swimmer - know the various strokes. Can't for the life of me figure out how to do the butterfly. On family vacations we used to spend lots of time in pools or on the beach & in the ocean.
As a child I used to be really bothered that my grandmother would not put her head under water b/c she just had her hair done & set.
I'm a pretty decent at treading water too.
If I ever have a kid I would like to get them in the pool as soon as possible. I think knowing how to swim is one of those things, like driving a shift car, that everyone should know how to do whether they use it often or not.
Grew up around lakes-however so polluted-learned water saftey at a young age-took classes at the Y. I also learned the hard way-got thrown off the end of a pier and was told to swim. Granted I had family members there, but still.
When did I go from Luke Skywalker to Obi-Wan Kenobi?
I'm quite skilled at the breast stroke.

I have always been a good swimmer. I swam competitively in college.

After spending a few years living in the Orient, traveling extensively through Southern and Eastern Europe, not to mention about 3 years on the beaches of eastern North Carolina, I'd say that not only am I a nationally competitive breast stroker, but I'm internationally renowned for my technique.

Should we expect to see you in the next Olympics?![]()

I don't think he's talking about swimming...
Also grewup on Lake Huron and love the water, but never tried to be a strong swimmer. Plus, I have problems with water going up my nose and getting "stuck" in my ears, so extended underwater periods are difficult for me.
My wife is often amazed that I am such a poor swimmer having spent so much time in the Lake, assorted local rivers and wonderful inland lakes as a kid
I'm sorry. Is my bias showing?
