I've seen a project very similar to this fast-food example in real life. An expanding University Village in Riverside, California almost consumed an entire block, but a Denny's and a Del Taco were in the way. So, the mixed-use complex with cinemas, residences, shops, restaurants, parking structures, and offices just built around the drive-thru and added water features and plazas nearby to make it all look good. And, the results are actually kind of nice.
