I was once told that Michigan is a "two party" state where both parties must be consent to the conversation being recorded. Additionally a computer voice comes on as "This conversation is now being recorded." Otherwise I was told that it is classified as illegal wiretapping.

Today I learned that a lesser known part of Christmas is that there is a guy called the "Night Rupert" who is Santa's nemesis. He shows up on christmas eve and puts kids in bags and beats them senseless. Or something like that

Today I learned that the top of my desk is not made out of paper and documents, but rather has a wood veneer finish that actually looks kinda nice... Who knew that was under there?

I found that out about mine last week in the run up to being on leave for 8 weeks. I also discovered that the floor was carpeted after exporting 18 banker boxes of old files. Apparently my office was the archival repository for a number of years before I joined the organization.

Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?
Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

Are you sure you're not hurt ?
No. Just some parts wake up faster than others.
Broke parts take a little longer, though.

Mittelschmerz is a medical term for "ovulation pain" or "midcycle pain". Who knew?

    Today I learned . . .

    Fifty-two weeks does not make a year. Do the math. 7 x 52 = 364.

What I want to know is this: was that extra day a working day and, if it was, where is my money?

Today I learned what 'Lagnaippe' is. So that's how tchotchkes get distributed!

People will miss that it once meant something to be Southern or Midwestern. It doesn't mean much now, except for the climate. The question, “Where are you from?” doesn't lead to anything odd or interesting. They live somewhere near a Gap store, and what else do you need to know? - Garrison Keillor

Must be forgetting about how we get an extra day in Feb every seven years.

Today you learned that leap years occur every 4 years, not 7.

    1 year = 365.242199 days.

Someone still owes me a day and a quarter, maybe in pay. I will gladly take cash.

Leap year I am prepared for. I get a third paycheck in February, so it is bigger without many deductions.

Today I learned that HR departments are probably not filled with the organization's most intelligent staff. I had a suspicion already though.
    And that concludes staff’s presentation...

Tell me about it. Our HR director is very good, the underling that handles our division's requests is not. We have a mutually spiteful relationship due to the mishandling of numerous items of mine.

Actually I learned that after posting this, but before reading your reply! Maybe I got dog years confused with leap years?

Our city attorney has said there has to be at least one person involved in the conversation that knows about the recording or else it's not legal.

....FBI is not an acronym. Nor are EIS, CIA or COS. These are initialisms, which are always spelled out when pronounced. NASA and NIMBY are acronyms because you pronounce them as words.

I had not even heard the term "initialism" until today.

Today I learned that those rays in the sky you often see in connection with religious imagery are called crepuscular rays

Today I learned, by reviewing this thread, that I apparently learn something on certain days. Which either means I am naturally inquisitive or I don't know squat. A third possibility is I am a naturally inquisitive person who doesn't know squat.

But sadly, what I really learned today is that when the mother of your son's best friend forbids him to hang out with your son anymore, there isn't a damn thing you can do to help him with his loss.

I'm really hoping I don't learn a darn thing today.
