Laotian General Vang Pao, revered among the USA's Hmong immigrants, died in Clovis, CA on 2011-01-06 of complications from pneumonia. He was 81.
Said by former CIA chief WIlliam Colby to be the 'Greatest hero of the Vietnam War', Vang Pao lead the Hmong warriors for many years in a CIA-sponsored guerrilla war against the Communists during the Vietnam War and then after the fall of the south, lead the Hmong refugees just as strongly during peacetime as they migrated to and settled in the USA - and was revered among them as much in peace as he was in war. (The Hmongs were marked for death by the Communists for fighting for our side in the War.) He was known for traveling extensively throughout California, the MStP area and various places here in Wisconsin to lend moral support and guidance to the Hmong people in their transition to life as Americans, including many times here in the Appleton, WI area (for example, he helped some former refugees cut the ribbon on a restaurant that they opened here in the Appleton area back in September, 2010).
R.I.P. to a true American hero.
