    Working for the DOT?

I've noticed that a few states DOT's having planning departments. Has anyone had any experience working for a DOT coming from a MUP/MURP transportation planning background and not from the classic civil engineering background? Do they even consider non-engineers?
    Just curious.

Easy answer? Yes, especially on the environmental (NEPA) side of the house. And, even for the more traditional transportation planning, most state DOTs I've worked with (or for, in one case) do hire non-engineers.

Yes there are planners at the DOT! Not just at the State level, but at the federal as well.

you will find planners working in the housing dept, the environmental dept.....

I can confirm that. I work at the Fedral Railroad Administration and in the Office of Railroad Policy & Development there are at least four staff with planning degrees.

I work for the local wastewater dept., as do atleast two others with planning degrees. I don't miss the zoning crap and don't see myself getting back into that.
