[IowaAPA] Department Renaming

Have any of you been involved in a process to rename a planning department (or any department for that matter)? What were some of the steps, and what would you suggest to do and not do? Our Board of Supervisors has directed us to look into different options for a new name for our department. Any feedback you have would be greatly appreciated!

I'll bet it is like street naming, as soon as the names are submitted they won't be liked and there will be long discussions of why this and why not that, and maybe even name calling about why this process isn't easier. I would think up some names, have a public hearing, and then whatever is finalized (maybe three or four names to be voted on by the Supervisors) expect it to be changed.

We renamed when our department was restructured to include additional responsibilities we went from Housing/Zoning to Housing & Community Development. We did not really go through any formal process we just began changing things as they came up such as letterhead, website, etc. It took a few years to completely transition but it has worked out pretty well.

In the late 1980s the City of Dubuque reorganzed and renamed several departments to include the word "Services" to reflect our roles in and commitment to public service.

I don't know if there was much if any public input in the name changes. I think these changes were made administratively by the City Manager with Departmental input, and 9ity Council approval.

I suggest you review all the services and activities that your department is responsible for, and then look for a name that encompasses these in a general, broad context.

For example, Story County Development Services as Rich Russell suggested would include zoning, subdivision, and site design review; code enforcement; floodplain management; building, zoning, well and septic system permits, etc.
