Try reading Harry Turtledove's "The Guns of the South" for an alternative and totally different take on things.

I read that book in high school. South Africans go back in time and give the south AK-47's seemed like a odd premise to me. The book does have some interesting thoughts on what happens after the CSA becomes a nation.Originally posted by Rygor

Yep. It's good, though, if you are into the alternative history genre. He's written a lot of books based on alternative outcomes of conflicts such as WW2, Revolutionary War, etc.

Definitely not a book, but here's a letter from a freed slave to his former master that is great, quick read. For some reason, it reminds me of Mark Antony's eulogy of Caesar in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.

My college age daughter, needing TB tests to qualify for candy-striping at a local hospital, found two local county health depts closed yesterday for "Confederate Memorial Day".
Some ghosts just won't go away.
The State of Georgia keeps that holiday on the books because, with the exception of MLK Day, the Legislature does not want to close the state government during their session (Washington's Birthday gets moved to the December 26 this year, for example).

It's very rare for people anywhere in the world to expend so much effort to celebrate an ignoble war their ancestors started and then fought 150 years ago and which they rather resoundingly lost. I don't get it. This country needs to get over it.

We get both Confederate Memorial day off and REL birthday off. B y the same token, we get regular Memorial Day, the 4th of July and MLK day off. so I suppose they balance each other. This area is such a hodge podge of people, most of them don't much notice or care.
