Hey all, I'll be visiting Kansas City in July/August and would like to see the town. Anyone from there/been there and know of anything interesting in the urban planning field?

I live in the Kansas City Metro and would recommend going to:
Country Club Plaza - urban design
Westport - urban design
Loose Park - great park with a great view of the Plaza
Liberty Memorial - best view of the Kansas City Skyline, hands down
Crossroads Arts District - best on a First Friday to see the "Creative Class" at work
City Market - urban design
Power & Light - redevelopment / entertainment district
If you have an specific urban planning interests, let me know and I can make more recommendations.
Cheers!

Everything zseaman said are good attractions and the spots most visitors check out. It really helps to get out and walk around, especially around plaza/westport and downtown, that way you can see how many fountains are in this city (hint: a lot!)
Might also want to check out the Brookside and Quality Hill neighborhoods as well. As a recent transplant from Chicago, my favorite area is near the Liberty Memorial. And check out Union Station, it's a massive building.
Insanity in individuals is something rare - but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule.
Check out the west bottoms too.
Old industrial area being re-purposed.
