    LED signs

    Hello cyber planners.

I'm interested in finding out which jurisdictions in California (other states okay too) have adopted regulations for on-site LED signs. If you just tell me which city, I'll track down your ordinance. Any links to information on LED signs that anyone wants to provide are welcome, particularly any scholarly articles on safety issues.

    A couple tips:

Regulate the things you can: scrolling, timing, noise, color, light output, setbacks, height, location, etc.

We aren't going to get away from electronic signage... it is the future. A clearly defined, well regulated sign is much more acceptable to all involved.

I've seen some of the most obnoxious LED signs are owned by local governments and placed in front of City Halls, Parks, Recreation Centers. Go figure, its only ugly if its someone elses sign!

Our City Council recently adopted rules that are 'interim' until we've completed a broader review.

www.calgary.ca/landusebylaw - the operational rules (message timing, brightness etc.) is the same for on site and off site forms of LED signs (section 72.1). But the specific rules for on site digital signs are in section 102.

    Sign Ordinances-LED Billboards

I am doing research for a community organization looking to regulate LED Billboards/Signs both off & on -premises. I am particularly looking for info on how these ordinances have worked to beautify your community and thus attract business, residents, and tourists.

City of Dallas allows LED signs on premise. We regulate what we can but it will never be enough. Also we just updated our downtown special sign district ordinance, which increased the chances for off premise digital and led signs. If you're headed towards digital or led signs for the first time, try a pilot program. It worked for us.

City of Dallas sign code is Chapter 7 of the city code.
