Bachelor of science in sustainability

A number of colleges are adding degrees in sustainability. The curriculum varies from school to school, but they all sound similar to planning with a hint of RE development, especially Florida's program.

Presumably, planning grads and sustainability grads will be competing for the same jobs. For this reason, I wonder if sustainability degree holders will influence the planning profession in the United States. For example, could a viable alternative to the PAB and the APA be born?

I honestly don't see it happening anytime in the near future mainly because sustainability is such a vague field. Like planning is one of the broadest fields out there but it still serves a specific function in society. Sustainability is just a set of principles where I'd imagine the whole field would be in the business of trying to get other professions to adhere to those principles. To me sustainability should just be a niche in professions instead of a profession in and of itself. As it is, a sustainability degree would probably in line with a liberal arts degree in usefulness.

Then there's the whole issue of how loaded the term sustainability is currently or how people only associate it with environmental issues instead of also including social and economic ones.
