Stanfest August 20, 2011 Holland, MI

After organizing a number of these events over the years, I've come to realize they can be hit or miss affairs - folks either can or can't make the time. Sometimes you expect a lot of participants and a lot show up, sometimes you expect a lot and only a few show. After last year's event in Ann Arbor, I decided we'd try something different this year - no polls about possible dates and locations....just a simple announcement that Stanfest 2011 will be held on Saturday July 16th in the City of Holland, Michigan. All interested in attending can meet at the New Holland Brewery around 1:00 p.m. There are fun things to do and see around Holland: a genuine 200 year old Dutch windmill (on city park property), uptight Dutch people, a world class state park on Lake Michigan, golf, swimming pools...movie stars, bookstores filled with many tomes extolling the virtues of abstinence, and uptight Dutch people.

Depending on who shows we can make plans to visit various sites in the area. I have some familiarity with the community, but would welcome anyone else perhaps more familiar with the town to act as tour guide that day.

    Anyone interested?

I know a pretty good GAP outlet store in the area.

In all seriousness though, I make it over to Holland multiple times each year. I could probably help organize this year.

I was going to try and be a smart aleck and start other listing bars/taverns in the area, but decided to not go there. Because I figured we probably would anyway....

    In any event, I'm in!

Will probably make a night of it and try to hit the the beach (weather permitting) at least for a little on Sat or Sun morning before heading back.

Bars? Why would you think I would go to a bar?

Uptight dutch people? Thats an attraction?

Is this one of those outlet clearance stores? They used to have one in Birch Run that actually had pants long enough for me!

Sounds like something to pencil in on my calendar. I am in the process of moving so I don't think I won't miss this one due to a break-in, like the last one.

I will be in the Emerald City that weekend otherwise I would try to make it. In all my years as a Michigander, I've never been to Holland.

Once again, Stanfest won't coincide with my (sometimes) annual return to MI.

Um yah, that's it... because I thought *you* would go to a bar. Not me or anything. Nope, not me.

That stinks! We can always try for a celebratory kick-off laefest. Or you could pub crawl it through the State on your way to/from your destination? When will you be here?

Current plan is to be in MI 6/18 thru 6/26 but I've got obligations on both weekends. I may try to drop in on some folks during the week in between.

I was in Holland today. The tulips are already starting to bloom like crazy, even though Tulip Time doesn't start until next Saturday.

Had lunch at Froggy's with the wife. Good burgers.

It was only about 50 degrees, but the pedestrian/bike activity was still fairly strong.

I want to come! Mid July huh? Hmmm, maybe I can swing home for a week and head up there. Let me count my pennies (and remaining vacation days).

Seconded. New policy: anyone travelling 1000 or more miles to attend a Stanfest drinks free.

    Free drinks? Woooo!

So, I checked my calendar. If I can swing the $2,500 tickets (gag), then I still wouldn't be able to make it on the 16th. I may be able to swing a trip from July 1 - 9 though. I'll get back to everyone about that.

I need a hotel recommendation. Anyone? Anyone?

Also, another option for our tour guides, New Holland is having tours at 12, 1:30, and 4. Cost is $5 per person.

Edited to say perhaps I should read the thread more carefully before posting suggestions. Oops.
