We probably have a few standared bits of guiding wisdom at our home. But the one that pops out to me right now is:
You can't teach them anything after 7pm
So, when the kids are off-the-wall and testing every bit of waning patience you have reserved as you try to get them brushed up, in bed, relaxed, etc. - just remember, IF ITS AFTER 7, YOU AREN'T GONNA TEACH THEM ANYTHING! So don't even try. You'll be happy you didn't...

To fully expedite the morning departure process, they should have considered getting more than one motel room/bathroom for the six of us. But I digress.
Growing up my dad would always tell us;
"If someone is going to get caught it is going to be you"
I don't know if that is a motto per se but it kept me out of some trouble along the way.
We have a similar one for vacations...

This applied to yard work, laundry, housecleaning, carrying luggage into hotels, and pretty much anything around the house that needed fixing. When I alerted Dad one evening that there was a snake hanging from the draperies in my parents' bedroom, he never looked up from his ballgame and said "Go get Mr. Wheeler " (next door neighbor), and I did.
My dad was wonderful; he just hated doing anything around the house. And maybe he was scared of snakes.

I was once helping my father do some repair on my grandmother's house and my father, much my senior (he was born in 1931, I'm only 43) told me "You know, in my day we had a saying - 'its good enough for government work!'" to which I replied "my generation's got a similar saying, dad. It goes 'f#%k it, its close enough!'"
