Are you smarter than a 5th grader?

I admit I've never actually seen the show but am vaguely familiar with the premise of it, so I'm appropriating it for a thread title.

Without Googling or checking any reference, can you correctly name the 13 original colonies?

Be honest when taking the poll (a thorough review of our security cameras and ISP logs will quickly discover any cheating!)

I bet people who grew up on the eastern seaboard do best at this.

The answer for all the pathetic losers who can't hack it

Check the logs: no googling here.

I did grow up on the east coast. I think I do have an advantage. That advantage, of course, being that I was a history major in undergrad.

I got eleven but I find that embarassingly I just kind of named the whole eastern seaboard but forgot New Jersey. I am a geography major with a history teacher for a father. I SUCK!

Thirteen? Sorry, there were only three original colonies:

    Canada
    New Brunswick
    Nova Scotia

I was counting on my fingers, remembered W Virgina was not, and came up with 14. I checked the list and I must have used my fingers wrong. I checked it thinking I was wrong to include GA. Never good at finger math!

apparently no, I am not smarter than a fifth grader. But I'm pretty sure I am tougher than a fifth grader.

I came up with 13, but I included ME instead of PA. D'oh!

    Hey, 12's not bad.

    12. Somehow I forgot Delaware, even though it's right over there next to MD and it was the first state (d'oh). Then somehow I thought Tennessee was one (though TN was the 16th state, so I wasn't so far off).

At least I knew that ME was a part of MA until 1820-something.

My advantage I guess was playing lots of Avalon Hill wargames in junior high and high school. I picture the playing board from the game 1776 as I list the states

now where did I put my +5 vorpal sword?.....

Nothing doing. I've tutored a number of friends for the citizenship exam and was a political science major.

12 - the beast of it is that I changed my answer from Rhode Island to Vermont. Always stick with your original answer...

    I got 9.

But that's because I'm a Californian. We left coasters have a real hard time identifying east coast states :P But I can at least distinguish Wyoming from Colorado!

Thirteen? When I was born there were forty-eight. I think. I could name the forty-eight. I think. Nothing before that matters to me.
