I want to take some vacation time this year to do some long overdue nature photography (for future oil paintings). I am interested in seeing the coastal areas/bayous/swamps south of NOLA (as well as Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, etc.). Can anyone recommend areas to visit? They can be parks, wildlife areas, refuges, but also just roads for driving. I have never been to the area so I don't know what is the best time for doing this (spring, summer, fall, etc.).

The premier bird watching/photography area in coastal Texas is the Aransas National Wildlife Area. That also includes the Matagorda Island Unit (see same website). Best for birds and also for weather is the fall and spring. Whooping Cranes winter over there so you'll have lots of people too.

The MS Gulf Coast is developed from state to state line. Off the Coast is MS Sandhill Crane NWR and the Desoto National Forest, but I haven't been to either one. I would also get this done either before June or after September. The four months in between are brutal. South of NOLA is Jean LaFitte National Historical Site but I've been there in 10 years. On the MS/LA line there is Bogue Chitto and I've seen the fringes of that off Interstate 59Originally posted by nrschmid

Audubon did many of his bird drawings while living around St. Francisville, along the Mississippi River north of Baton Rouge. I have done work in the area and would recommend it. St. Francisville has a nice historic district worth checking out while you are there.
If you are anywhere near Jenerette, go downtown and buy a couple pounds of shrimp from T-Bob's. They are the best, freshest shrimp you can find.
