Our finance director and entire finance department (3 accountants) were just fired after a meeting with our audit committee following receipt of the audit.
Asst. City Manager will be providing me a copy when he gets a chance, but he said it was the worst audit he had ever seen.

All other departments are clean & tight and work really well together--the finance department has been a festering problem for a little while and this audit gave the city manager the ammo he needed to make a major and much needed change. Basically, it was a bunch of sloppy work and gross incompetence--nothing indicating malicious intent. No funds missing so far and nothing that would result in repayment of funds (grants, etc.), but still a big mess to clean-up. The ACM & I will be covering that area next week, assessing the situation, etc. since we both have finance & QA/QC experience to set up interim measures & controls. We don't expect to based on the initial audit findings, but we'll make a call in the next few weeks on whether to conduct any forensic audit.
We expect to have an interim finance director and temporary accounting staff on by late next week.
It's a fucking mess and not how I wanted to wrap up my week.

I have reached the conclusion that I have achieved my highest level of incompetence. I have no interest nor desire to engage in the other issues affecting my jurisdiction. I don't feel I have the qualifications. I'm a land use guy, pure and simple. That's complicated enough. I don't want to take the next step. Unless I'm forced. Well then, who knows.

Continuing on about food, today we cruised around Publix for a bit, picking out "grazing" foods for Super Bowl Sunday. Although RJ may grill hot dogs/sausages before the game. Then since the high today was 76 d., we came home and sat out by the pool for several hours. Of course, I had to wear a big floppy hat because of the microdermabrasion last week, plus SPF 55 and foundation on my face. I hate wearing hats.
