http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/20/ar...ies-at-71.htmlThree bass-drum thumps at the beginning of one of the Band’s anthems, “The Weight,“ were all that he needed to establish the song’s gravity;
But particularly when lyrics turned to myths and tall tales of the American South — like “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” “Up on Cripple Creek,” ...— the lead went to Mr. Helm, with his Arkansas twang and a voice that could sound desperate, ornery and amused at the same time.
All classics.

Wow, wierd! I did not know he was close to death, but by sheer coincidence I deliberated between choosing 'The Weight' or 'Uncle John's Band' this morning for the jam of the day. My gut said pick 'The Weight', but ended up choosing 'Uncle John' instead. Maybe I shoulda listened to my gut?
People will miss that it once meant something to be Southern or Midwestern. It doesn't mean much now, except for the climate. The question, “Where are you from?” doesn't lead to anything odd or interesting. They live somewhere near a Gap store, and what else do you need to know? - Garrison Keillor
