    Hello from San Francisco

    Hello fellow planner-folk!

I just hit the 10 year mark of living in the Bay Area. Wow. Time flies.

I obtained my BA in Urban Planning at San Francisco State University in '10 and have yet to find any volunteer work/internships/general employment in the field. I suppose I've really come to Cyburbia for guidance. I need to take a fresh look at my situation to try to figure out new avenues and opportunities.

hope that I can find some help as well as give some.

    Cheers!

    Hello, from Dallas, TX!
"We do not need any other Tutankhamun's tomb with all its treasures. We need context. We need understanding. We need knowledge of historical events to tie them together. We don't know much. Of course we know a lot, but it is context that's missing, not treasures." - Werner Herzog, in Archaeology, March/April 2011

I've been there. I had a rather long period between school and my first real planning job. Plus you have the added issue of a bad economy. Just keep plugging away. I sent out a lot of resumes and job applications, and I casted a very wide net too - from Souix City to the Pacific Coast. Traveled a lot. Had a lot of interviews. Had a lot of rejection letters. I ended up with a planner job in the rat tail of Alaska but it got me started and later back on the road to Montana.

You may have to relocate to somewhere that isn't your first choice, but once you get your foot in the door and start learning real-life skills and haiving work experiences, that less than stellar first job can lead you to where you want to be.
