    It isn't summer until....

    - You eat a popsicle

    - you grill a hot dog

    - lie in bed, with your back slathered in solarcaine, yet still searing in burning pain, wishing you had listened to your SO when s/he advised you to put sunscreen on while mowing the lawn

    Summer
    Starts - Memorial Day
    Ends - Labor Day

Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?
Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

No. Just some parts wake up faster than others.

. . . Memorial Day, when you are legally required to have taken off your snow tires.

    it isn't summer until....

You're packing up for the weekend at the lake and realize you still haven't lost that 20 lbs.

Your OCD neighbor has dulled your limb saw again, and has a pair of scissors out to trim the grass around his mailbox post. Judas Priest, what a weirdo.

You're reminded one night that it's time to once again read "Magic by the Lake", the world's finest children's book.

You can hear the neighborhood boys vs. girls game of kick the can outside quickly devovling into a struggle for freedom and equality. If these events are a microcosm of the future struggles between the genders, gentlemen, I have the duty to inform you that our sex is hopelessly outmatched mentally and physically. We will become enslaved to an unavoidable amazonian like future. I'm actually quite looking forward to it.

When I lived in Michigan, it didn't start until the first dive into Lake Michigan on Memorial Day Weekend. "OMG, where did the boys go? Could they be the lumps under my chin?"

In Texas, it starts with the first 100 degree day.

and for some reason one never feels justly compensated by the fact the water is still warmer than the air temps in late Sept

    What's a "summer"?

Is that like this "snow" stuff you guys always talk about?

I love being "volunturd/voluntold" to do shit that I don't want to do. Tomorrow is our 40th anniversary gala and I was told I could go but would have a minor duty or two since I function as deputy director of my division. I was on the menu for the meet & greet at cocktail hour and lighting the table candle-no big deal. Now I have been "volunturd" to coordinate the dinner for the 20 piece band that is performing Next year I will buy the ticket and watch the other schmoes work.

...the Gulf is warm enough for me to jump in!

...the roads are free from school buses and parents' cars that clog every damn road around us (4 schools within 5 min of our house).

...the first weekend RJ grills dogs and sausages for lunch.

I have to watch for frogs on the sidewalk at night around here.

In Florida, when I hear the tree frogs all night.

We were sitting outside last night after dinner and heard the frogs in the greenbelt beyond our backyard.

Same in Arizona. Also when I can play 18 holes at a PGA quality golf course for $30 which includes a cart, water and a hot dog.

Rather than putting holes in the knees of his jeans from skidding across the driveway, your kid puts the holes in his actual knees.

Or the heat and humidity are both so high, it keeps you inside. And to think, I used to enjoy summer

Awesome. I was a planner in the cold rainforests of southeast Alaska. The salmon runs were incredible. You just cannot imagine there could be so many fish. And the determination to swim and jump upstream and wiggle up creeks that don't even cover their backs with water.

It is awesome until the die-off, when the smell of rotting fish would choke a maggot. The public library in Ketchikan was along the creek and when the fish died off, you did not want to be inside the library. You felt so sorry for the librarians.
