I guess since he's essentially a temporary employee, he can get away with that. Funny how some interim directors essentially stay on a permanent basis. In this guy's case he's got a pretty sweet gig though. $125k plus whatever he gets for his consulting work.

Did you hear the one about the zoning hearing examiner running a private law practice out of his City office (on top of his $105k salaried position)? How about the one where his assistant did the same thing (up to 20 hours a week in the City office where she was supposed to be a full-time employee)? Or the Housing Authority Director who...well, you get the picture. All have either been fired, suspended or resigned. Its been an interesting month.

There's a planning tech here who runs a city council operation out of her office. She works for the county but serves on city council in the city. The building we work in is actually in her district.

That situation has always struck me as odd but apparently she's been doing it for 15-20 years.

They must get some interesting candidates for positions down there. For every applicant all gung-ho about preserving Key West's one-of-a-kind architectural vernacular, there's probably another person hoping to just party and suck booze.

DFS CITY COUNCIL FIRES CITY PLANNER FOR REFUSING TO TAKE RANDOM DRUG TEST

The DeFuniak Springs City Council voted unanimously to terminate City Planner Greg Scoville on the grounds that he refused to take a drug test.
Scoville was one of several city employees chosen at random to participate in a drug test last week, but only he declined to take the test.

Well, even though it sounds like that isn't the case here, I think once the Florida court ruled it was unconstitutional, it ended the employers right to enforce that contingency. If they weren't as dumb as a bag of hammers, they would have waited a few weeks and fired him for no reason at all. Florida is a right to work state, so they need no cause, but by creating a cause, they've probably hurt themselves.

I don't disagree, I didn't dig into the labor laws of the state this case is from (couldn't even tell you it was FL).

Down here, they are "dumb as a fence post", not hammers, so just remember that for future reference. And, as in many rural areas (not just the south), you have county commissioners, and lawyers, with no big-city smarts, who have no clue about the law.

I said hammers, and I meant hammers. It wasn't because they were "down there" in the south, or in a rural area, it's because of what they did. Trust me... big city doesn't make you smart, either. There is plenty of evidence of that... DeFuniak Springs doesn't sound like a big place, but I didn't look up the population because it's irrelevant. To have five people vote unanimously after the employee reads case law from your own district, you aren't very bright. That City Manager should have consulted with their labor attorney and given an opinion at the meeting, and if that didn't happen, they should have tabled it.
