Had a problem last night with the AddThis bot hitting the site several times a second for a few hours. I blocked the IP. I've been watching the load at home, so when it starts to spike, I can track down who's responsible that minute.
The .htaccess deny file is growing by the day, with the increasing number of strange bots and spiders that consume bandwidth and processor time, but really don't bring any traffic to the site.

The MySQL server went down a few minutes ago. I manually restarted it. Don't know what caused it, though.

The server was running smoothly throughout the day, but we got a crazy load spike a short while ago, again with no increase in traffic.
Host says we may need a bigger server. I don't believe them. Traffic has been steady for the past two years.

Okay, I think I got it.
* Blocked a bunch of very aggressive bots, although I'm still having a hard time shaking Baidu, a Chinese search engine.
* Got a tweaked MySQL configuration that ultimately survived a smoke test of sorts, serving pages (slowly) while the load was up around 60+. Seems a bit faster, too.
