Impromptu Stanfest 2012? Royal Oak, MI

I am proposing a possible impromptu late summer Stanfest in Royal Oak, MI (northern Detroit suburbs) on Friday, September 14th. The date corresponds with a local screening of Detropia. There are plenty of places nearby to enjoy libations before or after the screening as well.

There is a screening that same night in Downtown Detroit as well (at the theatre in the RenCen) and we could always have the Stanfest down there if there is an interest to do so. I just initially suggest the Royal Oak location because a) it's closer to my home and b) I'm lazy.

Here's a write-up that appeared in the NYT earlier this year regarding the film: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/19/op...roit.html?_r=2. While I have a feeling that this film might be little more than glorified ruin porn, I am still very interested in seeing it.

I'm down with glorified ruin porn and libations. It's a rare weekend when both kids are at their respective other parents, so I'm thinking the bf (village manager and lover of Detroit) will be all for it too. I'm good with either Royal Oak or Downtown.

    OH COME ON...

Can't I find one available weekend on my calendar? That is the weekend that I will have family coming into town to assist with the final stages of "Project Paint the Green Monster". (AKA paint the house)

Otherwise, I would love to join.

Not much to do in the RenCen at that hour but get loud and thrown out of Andiamo.

Not much ruin-porn in that area either. Though the riverwalk has greatly expanded.

Marking my calendar to see it in Chicago. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Playing in quite a few other cities too...

I might be able to swing up! That isn't far from me at all.

I will be out of town earlier that week and I'm not yet sure what day I return, but I think I come back on Thursday!!!

I probably won't make the film, but I would love to share some drinks and stories with some fellow Cyburbians!

I'm only 20 minutes away, so I should be able to make it.

    Is this still a possibility?

I don't get off work until 5 and I doubt I could make it up there before 6:30 or 7:00. It would be fun to have a few drinks with some Cyburbians though!

I am still planning on making it out there.

The movie is playing at both 7:15 p.m. and 9:50 p.m.

The theatre is small and does sell out showtimes on occasion, but I have no idea how much of a turnout there will be for this (I have seen relatively little local interest so far). But if folks are concerned, you can always buy a ticket in advance: https://tickets.landmarktheatres.com...&TheatreID=232

So.... I'm good with making a night of it with dinner/drinks/movie, what was everyone else thinking about? Can we handle a 9:50 movie What about dinner/drinks at 6:30 or 7 and then the 9:50 show in Royal Oak?

I don't really feel like seeing the movie. But I'm down with meeting up for drinks whenever.

It's probably not do-able anymore. I've got a meeting the night of the 13th. Detroit is about a nine hour drive from here.

I think SW MI Planner's suggestion of the 9:50 movie and drinks/food beforehand is a good idea. That way if folks decide that they do not want to go to the show, they can stick around the bar instead.

Or....... those of us may skip said movie and stay for drinks. Not mentioning names.

Since you guys are familiar with the area, pick a spot and tell us where to show up. Depending on numbers may need to try to call in a reservation.

If people are not as interested in the movie and are more interested in just meeting up for a drink, I would offer that it might be worth it to either move it to Saturday afternoon or change the location. Friday nights in Royal Oak can be pretty crowded with many annoying college aged kids (my old-man-ness is showing). We could move the festivities to a bar in Ferndale (about 2 miles south) or some other establishment that might not be quite as overrun with youngin's. Just a suggestion...

We can't go Saturday, going to State/ND game in El. But Friday isn't looking good either because my bf's son has a soccer game on Saturday morning. So it would mean driving two hours to Detroit and two hours back on Friday, then another hour to EL on Saturday. So, decide what works best for you all, and I'll see if it can work.

At the very least maybe we can plan an outing at the MAP conference in October.

I am still in, but I am not interested in the movie. I just want to hang out with some Cyburbians. Friday or Saturday, whatever ends up working out.

Hey Old Man maybe we can move it to Ginaopolis, I wonder if Excalliber is still open? Yes these bars were happening for in the 1980's for the old guys and gals who wore Members Only Jackets and zodiac jewelry! Ferndale's crowds can be just as annoying. Maybe we can find a real dump in Hazel Park or Taylor?

    Hey it is the 14th!

I'm not sure if anyone is meeting up this evening for beverages or not, but I just got home from a week in Florida and am home sick on the sofa with a nasty sore throat. I'll be staying home since I have a slight fever and don't want to infect the masses.

Are you all still meeting up?

Can we postpone to next weekend or something?

It seems to have sort of fizzled out but I am still up for a meet-up with the Detroit-area Cyburbians (and anybody else who would like to come out) sometime this fall. Maybe a Saturday or Sunday afternoon would work better for folks...

Yes, let's shoot for a Saturday! That would be easier for me too.

I do, however, have a tiny person joining us in just a few weeks , so depending on the date, I may not be able to attend.

There are so many of us in this area though, we really should get together!

I agree! We are always on the go across the state, so always up for something. And TS, seems like it went so fast, enjoy these last few weeks!
