I was wondering if with video tutorials one can pick it up the basics in a day? I need to learn it for my class tomorrow.

Yeah, I use it, its fun...and free. Sure you could learn it from tutorials, but in a day? Depends on how much you need to know and what you need to do with it...

SketchUp is pretty easy to use. Something simple like that you could figure out in a day.
You can grow ideas in the garden of your mind.
I got a summers experience in an Architectural office a few summers ago where i basically spend all summer doing Sketch Up models. I knew nothing about it on the first Monday morning i started, and I would have classed myself a world class expert by the Friday of the same week. I would say that the basics could easily be picked up in a few hours, but i had a big background in CAD so that may have made it easier for me.
