I've been trying to stay out of here because the tears come with every condolence read but I had to respond to this one. I hope he knew how profoundly he affected all of us who have been on this forum for any length of time regardless of whether we had met physically. Somehow that needs to be expressed to Katie too.

Dan, you remember the time in Ann Arbor when it was just the three of us that afternoon? Bear drank microbrews with us because those were the kind of places we were drinking at. But when we walked into Arbor Brewing Co. and they asked him what he wanted to drink he says "Rolling Rock, if you got it"
People will miss that it once meant something to be Southern or Midwestern. It doesn't mean much now, except for the climate. The question, “Where are you from?” doesn't lead to anything odd or interesting. They live somewhere near a Gap store, and what else do you need to know? - Garrison Keillor

If I could have a beer - I would toast his memory with a Rolling Rock.

Although it pains me... today I salute the Bear and his favorite university. RIP friend.

I think we ought to award a Cyburbia 'Best Planning Thread' each year with an award called 'The De Noc Prize'. When blueshirts ask about the name we can just tell them it was named in honor of one the best damned planners they never met.

My heart sunk when I saw that you had Bear’s Michigan avatar on another thread.

I’m kind of new to the Cyburbia game but I always enjoyed his postings and perspective. He will be missed more than any adjective I can think of right now.

    As I said on facebook...

You will be truly missed BUN. My condolences to your family.

Avatar changed in BUN's honor as well.

Real sorry to hear this. He was truly an irreplaceable fixture here and his passing will leave a void. I remember reading his enormous thread on the city he was designing years ago and being amazed at the amount of thought he was putting into it. May he rest in peace.

*sigh* This is very sad news and not what I was hoping to hear about at all. My deepest condolences to the Bear's family if they get a chance to read this. He really did mean a lot to us here.

Just saw this. Tears are actually welling up right now. I never had the opportunity to meet Bear in person, but I always felt his presence in this virtual Cyburbian world. I will miss him.

A simple way to honor him -

For the next Laefest at the APA National Conference we need a badge with the UP and De Noc on it. Who could make such a badge that people could print out ?

Wow, this is the first time I read this thread and I am truly saddened by the news as well.

Though I haven't been on here much lately, I remember fondly talking with the Bear about Toledo. In early 2007, I was staying at a house only couple of miles from where he lived..in Swanton. In fact, I even went into his favorite bar there one Friday (Hub's) but he wasn't there that day (even though he would normally be there on a Friday). It's really too bad because I have never met anyone from an internet forum, and The Bear would have been a great first meetup.

As the years passed I always thought about Hub's and the Bear whenever I was in Swanton but I never got the chance to go back in there. Now sadly, I will never get that chance again.

I am sorry to hear about Bear. He was a wonderful character on the forums. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Avatar dutifully changed. For years we talked about Katie and him travelling west to catch my band. Came close in July but he was just not feeling up to it. I sensed he know something was seriously wrong.

PS our trumpet player has the same form of cancer; he is not doing too well either.
