    Veteran's Day - Holiday ?

    AIB Maister & terrplnr

Do you have Veteran's Day off (monday nov 12)
    Oddball
Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves?
Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here?
Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?
    From Kelly's Heroes (1970)

Are you sure you're not hurt ?
No. Just some parts wake up faster than others.
Broke parts take a little longer, though.

I am off Veteran's Day and I am also off Election Day. Turkey Day and Black Friday too. I like November

People will miss that it once meant something to be Southern or Midwestern. It doesn't mean much now, except for the climate. The question, “Where are you from?” doesn't lead to anything odd or interesting. They live somewhere near a Gap store, and what else do you need to know? - Garrison Keillor

I work at a college, and most college staff don't get Veterans Day off because most colleges stay open. Students and faculty may have it off.

I don't think my college does "minor" federal holidays because it fouls up the academic schedule, and the students need x number of class sessions before the end of the semester, which is usually a week or ten days before Christmas.

Most of our client base is Federal and DoD therefore we have Veteran's Day off.

The company employees pushed for the day after Thanksgiving two years ago and we got it. We do not get Election Day off. I think that's something for public sector employees in non-early voting states.

Our personnel manual says if Veterans Day falls on a Sunday we get the following Monday off as a paid holiday.

November is a fine month, indeed. I'm off for the General Election on 11|6; for Armistice Day on 11|12; Thanksgiving Day; and, Black Friday. It's also a three paycheck month

It is a paid holiday for us, however, a councilperson has scheduled a meeting for that day and I also have to fly to Pittsburgh that afternoon for a workshop on Tues. & Weds.

Not a holiday - taking the day off anyway.

As a veteran and owner of my own business I am taking the Veteran's Day holiday... to fly out to meet a client who will not be working that day.

This veteran has Monday off for the holiday. I'll be observing the occasion by going to McCormick & Schmick's for my free meal with the old folks.

What on earth qualifies a voting day as a holiday? I ask as a general question for the Throbbing Brian...

If we really respected the Democratic Process, I would argue that Voting Day is probably more important to get off than Labor Day or President's Day. It is much more important than Columbus Day that is for sure.

I would say holidays should represent something in our countries history that makes us all reflect and be proud.... MLK Jr. Day, Independence Day, Veteran's Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving.... Voting Day should probably be right up there...

It's a 3 day weekend for me next weekend. Some places in Indiana get Election Day off because of the location of the polls. Many government buildings have polling stations in them and I think there is a regulation requiring them to closed. When I lived in Indiana, I always got Election Day off.

And, for those across the border on 11-11 ...

TIL Rememberance Day in Canada is the equivalent to Thanksgiving in the US; the traditional dividing line between the commercial Christmas season and the rest of the year. However, like the US, the Christmas season has been arriving earlier in Canada.

    +1.
I thought it was strange that my community does not give Veterans Day off given our focus on veteran issues at the staff and council level.

Us too, that's why I'm surprised that we don't have it off. Oh well, guess it'll be extra quiet around here so I'll get caught up on stuff.
