Very interesting but I agree with Cardinal that some sort of reference point like interstates (and/or state and province boundaries) would be useful. I know that the intent was to see settlement patterns without stuff like political boundaries or roads but personally I would want to know why people moved into the areas they did and the roads might provide a partial answer.
It would be interesting if you added the info for 2000, 1990, 1980, etc. at the block levels so that one could see the change over time. However, finding all that historic data in a usable format for the entire country doesn't sound like it would be an easy task.
I make dot density maps like this quite often to illustrate stuff for site selectors. Sometimes the most simple mapping techniques, like dot density, are among the most useful.
