Gramps, we'd make the run to Cocoa next year. We'll keep that in mind. I've never been there.

So, in attempting to get to put down roots and build a circle of friends, I went to Shabbat services last night; the first time outside of Rosh Hashanah/Yom Kippur.

About 80% of the congregation were 60+ year old hippies. I was visibly out of place, due to my lack of gray hair and a beard. Mostly couples (M/F and F/F, no M/M), a few families with kids, and no singles of either sex who weren't AARP eligible.

Aside from the Shema and Kaddish, the service seemed indistinguishable from a UU service. In Ann Arbor.

The rabbi used the phrase "American imperialism" in the sermon.

When I tried to leave, by car was blocked in my a Prius barked about a foot from the driver side door, even though I was in the center of the parking stall. The bearded, ponytailed sixty-something owner eventually came out, and didn't even apologize.

When I lived in Cleveland, I regularly attended services at a Reform synagogue that was considered very liberal/progressive, but this service had me going "woah." I think next Friday, I'm going to check out the local Conservative synagogue. Maybe "Conservative" here is the equivalent of "progressive Reform" elsewhere.

I heard a story on NPR that Tacoma was named the Gayest City in America. I have spent some time in the Pacific Northwest and IMO Tacoma is the third gayest city on the Puget Sound. They said one of the criteria was a gay rugby team. I was not aware of such a thing...I wonder if Richard Florida includes rugby in his Gay Index.

It's the day of our 2 year old's birthday party. We invited 24 people. As of right now 11 have cancelled, some as soon as 30 minutes ago (2:00) and the party starts at 3:00. Where has consideration and manners gone, I have a very hard time believing that 4 kids in 3 families have fallen sick in the same day. What is it? Is it that people feel they need to say yes up front and then need to find ways to back out? My wife is pissed. The three couples who will show up will skyrocket to the top of our friends list automatically.
