Congrats to everyone who was accepted to Columbia today! I also got the email with the good news, though I think I'm leaning toward Cornell or MIT.

Yep, I am. The email the Associate Director sent out after the application deadline said that decisions would be made by the first week of April. I have a feeling we still have a few weeks to wait.

Congrats on the admission Losantiville. I am waiting for MIT too. I knew from the current students they did send out admission earlier than April. Last year was mid march. Maybe it is next friday. Finger crossed. Let's keep it posted here.

Also got the email from the Associate Director of Education yesterday that I was accepted to MIT. I still think I'm Cornell bound, but it's an honor to have been accepted to such a highly regarded program.

Congrats to the MIT-ers. We'll probably all run into eachother at a case comp or ULI conference this year - looking forward to it.

Archdevil, could I take you up on your offer re: nyc advice? I am wondering what your thoughts would be on living in Hell's Kitchen and commuting to Morningside Heights (and the neighborhood altogether). I think it is fairly price effective, offers a good commute distance to campus while offering easy access to a potential internship in Midtown or FiDi, and going out with friends around Manhattan. I have been trying to stay east of 10th so the walk to the metro is manageable.

    Hey chrisjr,
As you said, Hells Kitchen is a very convenient location for just about anything in NYC including Morningside Heights. The only problem for Columbia is you are subject to the local train (1) but the only way around that is living closer to campus. I agree with staying West of 10th, it's mostly car dealerships and warehouses by the time you get to 11th anyway. I lived in the area very briefly (55th and 8th) and I liked it. It can be a little hit-or-miss. Personally, I would suggest staying North of Port Authority and the tunnel entrance. I prefer the upper 40's and the 50's. 9th Avenue is lined with a good selection bars and restaurants which is a plus. In my opinion most of Hell's Kitchen lacks the residential neighborhood feel that you would get in other areas but otherwise I didn't have any problems with it.

Thanks-much appreciated. Any idea on other price effective neighborhoods to look at along the west side? fidi is too far south - perhaps Chelsea or Tribeca? West village is awesome but prices rule it out. UWS would be neat too but I think a little too grown up for me, and if i'm going to be living "up" there i would just live close to campus.

Correction, In my last post I intended to say "East of 10th" not West. Sorry, I really should proofread before I post.

You will not find cheaper prices in Tribeca or Chelsea. Tribeca is one of the more expensive areas in the city. I'm not saying it is impossible but it is highly unlikely that you will find anything affordable in those areas. The Upper West Side is one of the more affordable areas but, again as you mention, is an older demographic with more nanny's, dogs and children but still a nice location. I live on the Upper East Side and I can't complain. It is a great neighborhood with a good combination of young and old. There are plenty of bars and restaurants and the rents are of the cheaper in the city. To get to Columbia you can jump on a cross-town bus at any of the transverses (65th, 79th, 86th, 96th) and pick up the 1 train on the West side. Any cheaper in Manhattan and you will need to look at areas North of Columbia like Washington Heights and Inwood.

Didn't get into MIT Actually wasn't planning on going there anyway, class size seems unreasonably small.. Here's what they said on my letter: "In your case, we thought we should let you know that we very much liked your application, and would have liked to offer you admittance but were unable to do so because of a particular concern related to the length and quality of your work experience". Then they mentioned how they want 3 years of continuous experience. I had 2.5 + 0.5 (separated by a term at college), and also all of this was before I graduated from college. Just sharing my experience so it can help others plan their application. However, they mentioned twice in the letter that they want me to apply again in the future. Not sure if that's just generic stuff or it's a customized letter.

So, Columbia it is! Glad to see the discussion between chrisjr and Archdevil, I'm looking for apartments myself. I'm a sucker for views and glass buildings. Checked out Avalon Morningside and 808 Columbus last weekend, didn't like them too much. Now we're trying to see if we can find something a bit more south, Trump Plaza for example. If anyone has any perspective on this, please do share!

    hippy,
I am also a sucker for glass buildings and views but in Manhattan all I can afford is crappy, walk-up, brick buildings with views of projects. I am an expert on those but I have absolutely no perspective on anything with a Trump stamp on it. I will say that sometimes I cross over to the UWS and shop at the Whole Foods at 808 Columbus and I think that is a really nice area. The only con I see is that the area seems extremely residential.

    JFK,
Welcome, I will be attending the Open House next Monday. It would be great to meet some classmates before classes start.
