    New York City

I'm surprised! I didn't realize NYC's population now tops 8.3 million. And the rate of growth is accelerating from past years. A thread to discuss NYC's population growth and other topics in the Big Apple.

    -

(Reuters) - For the first time in at least 60 years, more people moved to New York City in 2012 than left it, swelling the city's estimated population to an all-time high of 8,336,697, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Thursday.

NYC mayor and whoever wrote this article need to wake up.
People are moving to the city from suburbs and renting because they cannot
afford a house or condo in suburban areas any longer, because bank took
    their property, because of unemployment.
We are observing a slaughter of American dream caused by government “of the people, for the people, by the people”.

I'm probably in the minority on this, but as a resident I think additional population growth is not something that NYC needs. Some of the subway lines are at crush capacity (i.e the 4-5-6) even on weekends. I'm not convinced that this growth leads to a greater quality of life for those already here. Then again, as a transplant who moved here 5 years ago, who am I to say anything?

We long lamented about the decline of the inner city and the donut-hole effect while preaching the virtues of intensification, transit usage, and utilizing existing capacity. I recently seen several impressive construction photos of new rail lines being built in New York. The cost must be in the billions of dollars. However, even with the new capacity it may not be enough to keep up with demand, especially if the city continues to grow. Interesting times

New York is a place of extreme wealth and extreme poverty. For every person that lives in NYC by choice there's probably another living there because there's no where else they could conceivably go. The latter by and large being new immigrants dependent on the various ethnic neighborhoods and social services to make ends meet.

Thank you so much for starting this topic. I've seen other New York City topics in this section, but they are more reflective of Ye Olde NYC. This topic is theNEW NYC!

The above quote contains some very powerful and controversial statements. Just about everybody would agree on the part about the large influx of new immigrants; regarding the rest of your quote: is it your educated opinion alone, or do you have statistics to share with us?

Before SuperStorm Sandy I would have disagreed with you.

Post-Sandy, I agree, and you may be closer to a majority. Sandy lost NYC more residential and/or 'other usable' land than Mayor Bloomberg would like the nation to believe. But I guess this subject is for the SuperStorm Sandy topic which I'm still not sure how to start. I don't see what was so controversial about what I said.
